TOUMANI DIABATE
It was about five years ago that word started coming through from Bamako about extraordinary goings on at the Hogon. A new and completely different kind of Toumani Diabaté project was said to be afoot - one that united his extraordinarily varied instrumental stylings with the voices of top local singers, including the great Kasse Mady Diabaté, which drew florid Guinean-style guitar and a whole posse of flailing Senegalese sabar drummers into one big, super-rocking, roots big-band: the Symmetric Orchestra. For Toumani the name evokes a perfect balance - a symmetry - between tradition and modernity, and between the contributions of musicians from a number of closely related countries. Senegal, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and of course Mali itself, were all under the sway of the medieval Mandé Empire, of which Mali was the centre and in which Toumani’s own musical traditions have their origins. Observing the way the different musicians affected the flavour of the music, Toumani hatched the idea of recreating the cultural equilibrium of the Mandé Empire in a modern musical context - offsetting slippery traditionally inflected guitar with hard-edged sabar drumming. Epic praise-singing and plaintive lute-riffing are booted forward by slamming kit drums, with Toumani’s own effortless, rippling phrasing cutting a jazz-like, improvisatory swathe through it all.

Toumani Diabaté is becoming recognised as one of Africa’s most gifted musicians. Now the Malian kora master releases his first solo album in 20 years. Featuring visionary interpretations of classic themes alongside ground-breaking improvised pieces, ‘The Mandé Variations’ is probably the most ambitious and challenging African instrumental album yet released. It is at once the definitive statement on where the kora is today and simply one of the most beautiful and melodically accessible albums you will hear this year. An important album for Africa, an important album for the world.

The Don of the Kora is back. Toumani Diabaté, uncontested master of the West African harp-lute, has been in a headlong flurry of recording activity since joining World Circuit Records in 2004. Now hot on the heels of the highly acclaimed ‘In the Heart of the Moon’ (WCD072) with Ali Farka Touré, Toumani returns with his most extraordinary album yet. A super-charged, traditional-meets-modern dance-band album, ‘Boulevard de l'Indépendance’ unites the two sides of this remarkable musical personality - the virtuosic traditionalist and the restless innovator - in one seething pot of rhythm. Be assured, this is like nothing you’ve heard from Toumani Diabaté before.
