ALI FARKA TOURE
Ali is Niafunké’s most famous citizen. Although internationally known as a musician he regards himself as a farmer. In Mali, although music is prized above anything else it is largely the monopoly of castes of hereditary musicians, whose special role for centuries has been to perform the praises and genealogies of noble families and to recite noble deeds and proverbs. Ali comes from a noble background. There is no tradition of music in his family, but he had a calling early on in life, becoming drawn to music by its power. He was a "child of the river".

World Circuit Records is proud to announce the release of ‘Savane’, the last solo album by the legendary Malian singer and guitarist Ali Farka Touré. Recorded in Bamako with his specially assembled down-home ngoni group, ‘Savane’ is Ali’s testament, a powerful reaffirmation of his umbilical link to his Malian musical roots. Already acclaimed as his finest album, ‘Savane’ is both one of the most traditional and seemingly the most blues-drenched of Ali’s recordings. The record occupied Ali right into his last weeks, and he finally declared himself satisfied with it shortly before his death in March this year.

"In the Heart of the Moon" is an inspired collaboration from two of Malian music’s most important artists, guitarist Ali Farka Toure and kora (West African harp) player Toumani Diabaté. Although they originally planned to duet on just one track, their creativity could not be contained, and a complete album’s worth of new material was recorded. There were no rehearsals, and performances were improvised from repertoire familiar to both men. With an electric atmosphere that was almost palpable, the album was recorded in three 2 hour sessions over consecutive days with a mobile studio at the Hotel Mandé, on the banks of the Niger River in Bamako, Mali.

Available for the first time in over a decade, World Circuit present the "Red" and "Green" albums by the great Malian musician Ali Farka Toure. Originally released on vinyl in 1979 and 1988, these albums have been digitally remastered from the original master tapes and are made available complete as a two CD set with full lyrics and sleeve notes. This is the first Ali Farka Toure release since his 1999 release "Niafunke".
These albums have been out of print for and have remained in the archives for over ten years, and as Ali's reputation grew so did that of these "lost" classics. Alongside this CD issue Ali has also just re-released these albums on cassette for the local market due to renewed interest. This is pure, unadulterated Ali Farka Toure, a must for both fans and collectors alike.

After “Talking Timbuktu”, Ali returned to farming in his hometown feeling that his travels abroad were weakening the link between the music and its source. So Nick Gold brought a mobile studio to Niafunké to capture Ali in his own environment. Throughout the recording Ali was moving between rice fields and the studio yet the results are some of his best recordings to date.
