SOUAD MASSI
She is a leading light among the young Algerian artists. She sings the Arabic language with a sweet and pure voice. Her songs are of folk rock rhythms (besides she is often compared to Joan Baez or Tracy Chapman). Her activism, popularity and courage brought her into the limelight. Souad Massi is basically free and generous. She has a golden voice and a sparkling talent. She creates a delicate and harmonious Algerian folk rock with activist and sensitive lyrics. But though she now lives in Paris, she does not forget her native country. Algeria is always in the heart of both her music and life. And she carries on fighting even over the Mediterranean sea. Even if her family is still there she wants to take advantage of the freedom of expression she is given in Europe to say aloud what she has been singing for many years. She explains with accuracy and consciousness what happens in Algeria everyday and keeps on denouncing the oppressors without being boastful nor activist.

Souad Massi is now one of the leading female World Music Artists, having sold over 300,000 albums around the world. She has stamped her own identity, her own style, with her culture-
blending sound - a mix of traditional, rock, folk, classical, flamenco, while her ballads are melodic, poignant, achingly beautiful. Just as Souad Massi herself is all light and shade, innocence and experience, melancholy and optimism, so is this beautiful representation of the best of her 3
albums reinterpreted.

On the day when Souad Massi was in Tunisia for a concert, she was overcome by an enchanting whiff of honeysuckle that carried her back to her childhood in Algeria. The flower’s sweet, sensual, dazzling perfume prompted the title track of her new album…
On “Mesk Elil”, the singer’s precious voice blends with subtle arrangements of classical strings. “Mesk Elil”, her third album, is her most controlled so far and yet the most open in spirit. It naturally features the tender, languishing folk colouration that captivated listeners when she made her recording debut with “Raoui” in 2001 and consolidated its success with “Deb” in 2003.
“Mesk Elil” ("Honeysuckle") is a record of rich, varied nuances, shining with all Souad Massi’s hypersensitivity and sincerity.

"Souad’s music perfectly fuses North African traditions with folk, jazz, and rock accents. While she’s often compared to Tracy Chapman, her musical sophistication and clear and intense vocal style make Joni Mitchell a more telling reference. An outstanding debut ..." Observer
"One of the finest new artists of the year, her debut album is remarkable both for her cool, sad edged vocals and for the variety of her highly accessible, tuneful, self composed songs…She is charming, clever and deserves to be a major international star…" Guardian

Souad Massi has had the time to let her second album mature, meet other artists and tour extensively. Musically, she has blossomed, allowing her to pursue her dreams with even more intensity and verve. From the very opening chords of this new album, there is a world devoid of arbitrary borders, burbling tablas from Pakistan, gypsy intonations, the sobbing of cellos, ethereal lutes, cosmopolitan folk-rock, Andalusian flamenco… throughout this vibrant, generous album, her nuance-laden voice soars and swoops with a fabulous confidence and subtlety.
