AFRO CUBAN ALL STARS

Juan De Marcos Gonzalez, a central figure in Cuban music today, has a set himself a lifetime mission: to show the wealth, diversity and vitality of Cuban music to the world. His work with the Afro-Cuban All Stars, the Buena Vista Social Club, Rubén González, Ibrahim Ferrer, Sierra Maestra and others has made an extraordinary contribution to raising the profile of the music of his country throughout the world.

DM Ahora! Records is the new label masterminded by Juan de Marcos Gonzalez and is the most promising development from Cuba thus far into the new millennium. DM Ahora! Records is indeed the first entirely independent Cuban-run record company, a new force competing from the inside with the only Cuban State-owned label, the monolith Egrem Records and the foreign companies which have hitherto dominated the international marketing of the island’s rich musical heritage.

Step Forward

Step Forward has a double meaning: it marks the launch of Juan de Marcos' own label, DM Ahora! Records and is also the realization of a long-held dream - the opportunity to nurture a new generation of Cuban musicians and to demonstrate that Cuban music continues to be as diverse and inspirational as it was in its 50's heyday.

This album, featuring over fifty musicians assembled under the Afro Cuban All Stars banner is blueprint for the future. With the exception of the traditional Afro Cuban religious Batumbata, "Addimu a Chango" and a classic Arsenio Rodriguez son montuno title, "Lo dicen Todas", the twelve tracks are new compositions. There is even an excursion into the highly deserving world of Franco-Cuban musical cooperation, with a delightful guest appearance by one of France's top stars, Bernard Lavilliers, on the latter's classic, "On The Road Again".

A statement of DM Ahora! Records, Step Forward is a snapshot of where one of Cuba's top musical creators is at right now.
