OUMOU SANGARE

Oumou Sangare is Mali’s great diva, champion of women’s rights, and one of the world’s most astounding female voices.  Drawing deep from a wealth of musical traditions from Southern Mali, Oumou Sangare’s idiom is the hypnotically rhythmic home-grown music that has become her trademark: wassoulou.

Oumou’s lyrics talk about the concerns of everyday life in contemporary Mali, especially the problems that women face on a daily basis. Her songs talk openly about a diverse range of subjects that previously would have been considered taboo in West African society, such as songs about female sensuality or the problems of polygamy.

Seya

Seya (Joy) is the first album in six years from 'Mali's Star of Stars' and it reaffirms her position as one of Africa's great female vocalists and an African phenomenon. Since ‘Moussoulou’, her debut release, rocketed her to national superstardom in 1989 she has retained her position as one of West Africa's most admired and outspoken artists.

Adored by her public, Oumou Sangare is the most popular female singer in Mali and alongside Salif Keita she is arguably the country's most famous musician. And this in a country renowned for its music where stars such as Amadou and Mariam, Toumani Diabaté, Bassekou Kouyate, Rokia Traoré and Ali Farka Touré have dominated the 'world music' scene on the international arena.

Oumou is strong, charismatic and passionate about her homeland. A modern woman, she bridges the divide between cosmopolitan and traditional Africa. Loyal to the beliefs she sang about at the start of her career, she continues to speak out and spark national debate on previously taboo subjects such as polygamy, underage forced marriage, sensual love and the role of women in African society.
