RUBÉN GONZÁLEZ

Unknown or ignored by the public until his Buena Vista Social Club success, González has long been recognised and admired by the cognoscenti as one of the greatest of all Cuban pianists from the glory days of the 40s and 50s. But it wasn’t until the overwhelming success of his debut album, followed by extensive touring in Europe and the U.S.A. that he received the world wide recognition due to him.

Chanchullo

At  83, Rubén releases his second album “Chanchullo”. The new album finds Rubén in his prime - he is playing with more power and aggression than on his debut (which was recorded following a long lay-off from playing). On this album, he plays with the fire of an 18 year old and with incredible swing, attack and inventiveness. The repertoire for this album is drawn from various eras of Rubén’s past, with a variety of rhythms including danzón, son montuno, cha cha cha, guajira and descarga.

This is a celebration of Rubén's re-discovery, not just in terms of success but of his capacity within himself to play with renewed vigour and inventiveness which is hinted at on his first album. Here Rubén is more powerful, energised and vital, demonstrating a confidence that he has found after touring the world and recording new works since 1996. The success of the Buena Vista Social Club has rejuvenated Rubén. Never one to sit still, he is happiest when touring and has declared that he hopes to perform everyday of his life.
