ANI DIFRANCO

Over the course of the last decade, 34-year-old songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist Ani DiFranco has toured the globe countless times playing to ever-larger and louder audiences, many of whom appear to know every one of her lyrics by heart, including a few she herself has long forgotten. During that time, Ani has released 16 self-produced solo albums, 2 collaborations with storyteller Utah Phillips, and numerous side projects on her own label, Righteous Babe Records. In short, she's a perpetually busy girl for whom the word "vacation" is simply not an operational concept.

Reprieve

Every new album from singer/songwriter/guitarist Ani DiFranco gives listeners a reason to get excited about music all over again, and her latest, Reprieve, is certainly no exception. Across 12 tracks, DiFranco ignites more of her signature blend of poetry, politics and musicianship.

Carnegie Hall 4.6.02

Ani DiFranco’s live shows are legendary, whether performing with a six-piece band or standing alone with her guitar, but some shows stand out from the rest. Ani’s historic 2002 solo performance at Carnegie Hall is one of those. The ecstatic vibrancy of that evening is captured on Righteous Babe Records’ latest release, Carnegie Hall 4.6.02.

Knuckle Down

On her last album, "Educated Guess", DiFranco performed completely solo, playing all the instruments, recording the tracks in her own home, and even engineering the disc herself. This time around, she has invited a fellow musician to co-produce the new record with her, and while a few songs are still primarily one-person affairs, she's also joined by more than half a dozen guest musicians throughout the album.


The music Ani has created with their help is as stunning as ever. Through twelve new songs as intricately crafted as short stories, Ani DiFranco creates an unforgettable musical self-portrait of a woman coming to grips with love's twists and turns, confronting the legacy of her family, and learning to live on her own terms.

Educated Guess

Ani DiFranco has been “on her own” for a long time. But not since the release of her second album back in 1991 has she been quite as much a solo act as she is on her latest CD, "Educated Guess". On it, Ani not only plays all the instruments and provides the lead and backing vocals, but for the first time in her career she singlehandedly did all the recording and mixing. So if it weren’t for Greg Calbi (who mastered the album, as he has done with almost all of Ani’s recordings for the last decade), we would be talking about a one woman album. "Educated Gues"s is truly a singular sensation. It was recorded on vintage reel-to-reel equipment in a shotgun shack in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans and back home in Buffalo. Deliberately restricting herself to 8 tracks of audio and happy to incorporate such accidental accompaniment as falling rain and passing trains, Ani uses the self-imposed limitations of her minimal set-up the way poets embrace the formal restraints of a sonnet: as a vehicle for personal expression. The end result is an album as intimate and fresh as the very best of her work has always been.

So Much Shouting - So Much Laughter

Ani's 2002 release is a live, double disc CD that offers up 2 hours of music, including 3 previously unrecorded songs and 20 more compositions from every phase of her career, all recorded with the beloved 6-piece band she toured with from 2000-2002. You can be sure there's spirit aplenty in the live recordings Ani has chosen to release. Given her recent return to touring solo, "So Much Shouting" functions as a very personal tribute to a particularly memorable era in her ever-changing career.

Evolve

Throughout her career, Ani has never shied from pursuing new musical directions. On "Evolve", her latest release on Righteous Babe Records, the singer/songwriter/guitarist continues to grow, incorporating a wide spectrum of sounds and ideas with the restless energy of a born innovator. "Evolve" is a carefully-crafted studio creation that still possesses the loose spontaneity of a live show. Favoring whispers over screams and delicate, open chords over power strumming, "Evolve" takes an intimate look at a world as determined to change as the singer herself.

Revelling - Reckoning

Several of the 29 tracks here have already become audience favorites at Ani’s concerts over the last year, but there are plenty of surprises as well, including atmospheric instrumentals and spoken word passages. As always, the songs provide a deeply personal means for Ani (and, by extension, her audiences) to respond to events in the world around her, from racially divided cities to the politics of family interactions to what she calls “the culture of the quick fix prescription”.


The elegantly designed package is divided by theme into two parts, "Revelling" and "Reckoning", each with its own lyric-and-photo booklet. Between them, they reveal countless new dimensions to this constantly evolving musician, while establishing yet again that Ani remains true to the qualities which first endeared her to listeners around the world.
